5 perished on October 19, 1940, in the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway trainwreck at the then flooded Lorne Creek, near Pacific, B.C, which had washed out the train tracks. John (Jack) Calvin Carpenter (engineer), Sylva (Sam) Joseph Mayer (fireman), J.S. Thom (of Hazelton), P. Sterrit (of Kitwanga), and Otto Thom (New Hazelton)
