Four or five men perished on October 19, 1940, in the Canadian National trainwreck at the then flooded Lorne Creek, near Pacific, B.C, which had washed out the train tracks. John 'Jack' Calvin Carpenter (engineer), Sylva 'Sam' Joseph Mayer (fireman), J.S. Thom (of Hazelton), Otto Thom (of New Hazelton), and possibly Wladyslaw Ciszek (of Hazelton) were among the victims.
