James Peek & George Frean started the company. Peek Frean & Co. was the first mass producer of biscuits and employed over 3,000 people in its time from when it opened in 1866 to when it closed in the late 80s.
Description
a) A round metal cookie tin with pictures of cookies all over the sides. The cookies have white, red, blue, yellow, and brown icing with designs of humans and animals drawn on them. Written on two white cookies in black ink is "MADE BY PEEK, FREAN, & CO. LTD LONDON, ENGLAND". Written on a blue cookies on the bottom of the tin is H.B.&S. LTD. READING, ENGLAND. b) The metal push-on lid with pictures of the same cookies across the top. Written in the centre on a blue background is "BISCUIT AND VITA-WEAT CRISPBREAD MANUFACTURERS BY APPOINTMENT PEEK FREAN'S PLAYBOX REGD BISCUITS".
