Description
Black leather harness. This harness appears to be the rear part. It consists of 5 leather straps attached to a round metal ring. One strap is short and divides into two thin straps that connect to each other by a buckle and a clip. Also fastened to the ring are two long leather straps, one on each side of the short strap. These long straps could possible be the lazy straps, these would hold the trace or tug. The last piece connected to the ring is two long straps with buckles. These straps are fastened to a triangular piece of leather that splits at the bottom to accommodate the straps. The triangular leather piece measures 11cm X 10 cm. The leather piece is situated under the metal ring.
Narrative
'A Nineteenth Century Source Book' by Alan Wellikoff, p. 111
History Of Use
A harness such as this one would have been used on horses in the early 1900's. Various pieces of the harness could be bought in order to construct a harness from the 1902 Sears Catalogue p. 420. Presumably this harness was used by Al Banister.
