- The Aidas were a Japanese-Canadian family who lived in Smithers during the 1920s-1940s. Kintaro Aida, born in Tokyo in 1888, immigrated to Canada in 1906 and married Sadako Fuseya-Wanibe, who had come to Canada from Japan in 1909. The couple had three sons in Prince Rupert - Tatsuo 'Tat' (b. 1916), Fujio 'Joe' (b. 1917), and Tetuso 'Ben' (b. 1919) - before moving to Smithers. Two more children - a son named Asao and a daughter named Sumiko - were born here in 1927 and 1929 respectively. Kintaro ran a tailor shop and rooming house, while Sadako managed a laundry. Sadako, Asao and Sumiko visited family in Japan shortly before the outbreak of World War II and were unable to return home until after the war. Asao got married in Japan and remained there. The rest of the Aida family moved to Stouffville, Ontario in the late 1940s. For more information, see finding aid.

- Alexander Roy McDonell (Jr.) was born in Orillia, Ontarion on January 2nd, 1885, to parents Alexander Roy McDonell (Sr.) and Catherine Campbell. While McDonell first worked as a teacher in Ontario, he decided to move west to pursue other career options, moving to Hazelton, B.C., around 1910. Once in Hazelton, McDonell played for the Hazelton Hockey Team (1912-1913) and coached the Hazelton Baseball Team (1913), while also working as a timekeeper for the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway near Hazelton. He later pursued work as a prospector, working in the Rocher de Boule Mine. He returned to Ontario briefly to marry his fiancée, Nellie Geneveive Cavanagh (born January 4, 1886) and together they moved back to Hazelton, B.C. On August 21, 1921, their son John (aka Jack) Donald McDonell was born. On June 8, 1923, the McDonells prematurely lost their daughter, May Geneveive McDonell, one day after her birth. Nellie passed away shortly after, leaving Roy to raise his then two-year old son, John. Thus, McDonell asked his sister, Margaret, a music teacher, to move to Hazelton to help care for his son. Roy McDonell was heavily involved in the local sports teams, coaching hockey teams and umpiring baseball games. He also worked as a fisheries inspector for the Department of Fisheries in Smithers, B.C. until his retirement around 1948. In May 16, 1943, McDonell’s son, John, was killed in a flying accident while serving as a pilot for the Royal Canadian Air Force (R.C.A.F.) in Scotland. On January 1, 1963, McDonell passed away in Smithers, B.C.
- Scope and Content
- Records primarily reflect McDonell’s time as a Fisheries Inspector and include correspondence, newspaper clippings, receipts, tax records and photographs. This series also includes records collected by McDonell, which pertain to his son, John Donald McDonell. These records include photographs and correspondence. Photographs depict Roy and John together, John in the R.C.A.F. and John’s funeral and grave.
- Arrangement
- Files 10 and 11 held numerous receipts kept by Roy McDonell. Considering the repetition of purchases and volume of such records, a sample of was taken and the rest destroyed. As well, files 10 and 11 contain tax records related to properties held in Mary McDonell’s name. However, these are arranged under Roy McDonell as the records seem to have been collected and held by him.

- The original holdings of the Babine Bonanza Mining and Milling Co. (BBM&M Co.) consisted of five two post, non-crown-granted claims: Homestake, Bonanza, Lucky Strike, Babine Chief and Bulkley Pioneer (lots 1859, 1861-1864 respectively). They are alternately described as being located on one: the east slope, and two: the north slope of the Babine Mountains at 5000 feet above sea level. Originally located in July 1906, by J. Dibble and M. J. Brewer, the claims were bought in 1907 by Cronin and Charles Theis. At some point a sixth claim was acquired: Eureka, lot 1860. The original five claims were given crown-granted status on April 8, 1911. Afterwards, the Eureka claim was also crown-granted. Over the years, BBM&M Co. staked several other claims, none of which were ever given crown-granted status. In 1909, BBM&M Co. was incorporated and on September 27, 1909, both the first stockholders’ and directors’ meetings were held. At the stockholders’ meeting, James Cronin, Charles Theis, M.J. Brewer, A.H. MacNeill and William Huntley were elected as the first directors of the company. While at the directors’ meetings the following officers were elected: James Cronin, President; Charles Theis, Vice President; and William Huntley, Secretary. Development work continued sporadically until 1923, the last year that Cronin worked the mine himself. The mine wasn’t very prosperous and impeded by reduced access, weather conditions and funds. Following this, the company and the mine underwent a period of uncertainty. By 1923, work at the mine had reached the stage which necessitated a large capital outlay for the purchase of heavy machinery, including such items as a concentrating mill. This situation, coupled with Cronin’s failing health, appears to have prompted the BBM&M Co. into making a concentrated attempt to sell the mine. Cronin had the most mining knowledge of all the investors, and most deferred to Cronin in matters which required such expertise. The terms set down by the BBM&M Co. were firm and barely negotiable, and asking price ranged from $360,000 to $400,000. During this time, James Cronin passed away, thereby increasing the reasons for selling the mine. Thousands upon thousands had been expended on the min over the years with no return and engineers who surveyed the mine claims felt the land was not worth the risk. This left Annie Cronin with shares in a company that would continue to cost the family money. The burden of continuing the attempt to sell the min fell to Rose Cronin Andersen, John T. Cronin and Charles Theis. Eventually, they modified their stand to accept reasonable investment deals. Finally, in 1928, an agreement was made to bring in a new investor, Anglo London Mining Corporation, with Managing Director, Grant Mahood. The deal proposed that the BBM&M Co. capitalization would be raised to 2,000,000 shares with 865,000 shares being retained by those already holding stock in the company. Anglo London would then hold 1,020,000 shares. The finalized negotiation saw that Anglo London would acquire 679,000 shares from the BBM&M Co. treasury at a cost of $300,000 that was to be spent on developing the property. A block of 86,000 shares were to be put up by the Cronin’s and Theis, giving Anglo London control of fifty-one percent of the company. Almost immediately, the BBM&M Co. began having issues with Mahood and Anglo London. The contract provided a clause whereby a minimum payment was specified, without stating that more than the minimum ever had to be paid at one time. Taking advantage of what the BBM&M Co. came to see as a loophole, only the minimum was ever paid. In the first year of the contract, a confrontational attitude was adopted between companies. In June of 1929, the Anglo London Corp. attempted to change its name to the Babine (Cronin) Mines, Ltd. The BBM&M Co. refused permission for the Cronin family name to be used. Shortly, thereafter, in August 1929, Anglo London adopted the name Babine Bonanza Metals, Ltd. However, the new name did not ease the tension between companies, as BB Metals was now regularly behind in its payments and was often in debt for supplies and the company payroll. When the situation did not improve, the BBM&M Co. began inquiring in the possibility of cancelling the Mahood/BB Metals contract. They also consulted lawyers on the questionable legality of Mahood locating his own claims next to BBM&M Co. holdings. Finally, at a stockholders’ meeting in November 1930, they voted to break the contract. In 1934, the Babine Bonanza Mining and Milling Co. filed a lawsuit against the Omineca Silver King Mines, Ltd. The controversy arose after a claim that had been staked by James Cronin was allowed to lapse due to improper filing of the appropriate papers following the death of Cronin. Although the BBM&M Co. relocated the claim and filed the papers accordingly, they only learned of their error when Omineca Silver King Mines Ltd. also filed a claim that overlapped the BBM&M Co.’s Speculator claim. Accidentally, the claim was re-staked under the name of Windy, which overlapped the Speculator and another claim -- the Contention. The two claims (Rex and Rex No. 1) of Omineca Silver King Mines Ltd. Overlapped all three of the BBM&M Co.’s claims. While the judgement is not found in the Cronin Family fonds, a copy obtained from the Provincial Archives in Victoria shows the Omineca Silver Kings Mine Ltd. won the judgement and BBM&M Co. lost those three claims. While the records within the Cronin Family fonds only reflect all years before 1934, Babine Bonanza Mining and Milling Co. (then Cronin Babine Mines Ltd., 1948; New Cronin Babine Mines Ltd., 1956; Kindrat Mines Ltd., 1966; Hallmark Resources Ltd., 1972) was still active until January 26, 1977, when it was voluntarily liquidated.

- The Bulkley Lodge is a long-term assisted living facility in Smithers operated by Northern Health Authority. Founded by the Society of Concerned Citizens (incorporated 1973), the Lodge was officially opened on October 12, 1978 by B.C. Health Minister Bob McLelland. In 1982 the Society of Concerned Citizens was renamed the Bulkley Lodge Society in order to better reflect its goals of supporting the facility. Initially taking in personal care and immediate care residents, the Bulkley Lodge was licensed for 7 extended care residents in 1988; this number has since increased. The building underwent significant renovations throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. Today (2020), Bulkley Lodge cares for 70 residents across four units. It offers a central dining and activity room, a main lounge area, a self-serve coffee bar, a hair salon, and an exercise room. Residents are able to enjoy social activities, therapeutic recreation, spiritual programming, occupational therapy, and specialized nail and foot care. Some of the original board members included Bea Quadros, Pat McCammon, Jim and Margaret Goodacre, Ev Glass, Margaret Graham, Marguerite Perry, Mary Baker, Jim Robinson, Mel Burchette, Joe MacDonald, Flo Hidber, Audry Cook, Ron Kilby, Sid Beerda, Bill Bryant, Anna Morris, Johanna Huisman, Doris Stahel, Louise Kratz, Gary Lobley, R. - Talk of forming a Bulkley Valley Agricultural Association to oversee the planning of an exhibition began in 1910 (Interior News, May 1910). Various names were used before incorporation, such as: Bulkley Valley Agricultural Association (Interior News, July 27, 1912), Bulkley Valley Agricultural Association and Farmer’s Institute (Omineca Herald, June 7, 1913) and Bulkley Valley Agricultural and Industrial Exhibition Association (Interior News, June 21, 1919). On July 14, 1919, the Bulkley Valley Agricultural and Industrial Association was incorporated under the Agricultural Act. The mandate of the Association was to "advance the interests of agriculture and to hold an annual exhibition of agricultural products at Smithers, and to do all such other things the directors may decide for the advancement of the association, the farmers and farming." The first directors of the Association included A. Kilpatrick (President, Smithers), J. G. Wood (Vice-President, Telkwa), and L.B. Warner (Secretary Treasurer, Smithers), George Oulton (Smithers), A. J. Prudhomme (Telkwa), E. C. Barger (Telkwa) and William S. Henry (Smithers) (Interior News, June 21, 1919). Smithers held its first Fall Fair in Albert Park, September 30th, 1919. After several years the Fair became a three-day event, presenting a wide variety of exhibits including agricultural displays, livestock and logging shows, handicraft and homemaking exhibits, stage shows, and a midway. The Fair continues to this day, having been held every year since 1919 except for 1932-1933, 1938-1945, 1950-1952, and 2020.

- The Bulkley Valley Brass Band was founded in October 1970 after an unsuccessful attempt by the Smithers Rotary Club to form a community brass band. Whereas membership in the Rotary Band had been restricted to Smithers residents, the Bulkley Valley Brass Band widened its scope by welcoming members from Telkwa and Houston. It also sought to ensure its longevity by purchasing instruments which would be held by the band rather than by individual members, allowing them to be passed on to new members if their original users left the group or moved away. Anyone above the age of 12 was able to join, regardless of skill level. The BVBB’s director at its time of founding was Norman Atkins and its treasurer was Paul Sikkes, who also played trumpet for the band. The BVBB’s held its first concert, “An Evening at Home,” on December 12th 1970. It went on to participate in events such as Christmas Concerts, the Lakes District Music Festival, and the 1971 BC Centennial Celebrations Parade. The band won a great number of prizes in various music festivals. It was directed by Norm Atkins from 1970 until his death in early 1974. By January 1981 the band was in a state of abeyance due to a lack of local brass players. It does not appear to have been restarted.

- The Bulkley Valley Community Arts Council (BVCAC) is a Smithers-based organization which promotes awareness of, and access to, the arts for Bulkley Valley residents from Houston to Hazelton. Its work includes funding arts projects, providing bursaries to aspiring artists, and coordinating community events. Council membership includes local artists, musicians, vocalists, dancers, and community organizations. The BVCAC was officially incorporated under the Societies Act in March 1980, although its history dates back to at least the late 1960s.
- Custodial History
- Items were created and used by the Bulkley Valley Community Arts Council during the course of its day-to-day activities. They were retained as internal records until being transferred to the Bulkley Valley Museum on May 19th 2021.
- Scope and Content
- This fonds includes textual and graphic records, photographs, and electronic media created and used by the Bulkley Valley Community Arts Council during the fulfillment of its mandate. The majority of the material is textual or graphic in nature, including foundational documents (constitution, certificate of incorporation, by-laws), policies, reports, financial statements, meeting minutes, agenda books, grant and bursary applications, project proposals, cast lists, pamphlets, and posters. Also included are 36 photographs and two scrapbooks related to children’s concerts in the 1980s-1990s, and a DVD with two short demo videos produced by local filmmaker Taylor Fox in 2009.
- Arrangement
- This fonds has been arranged into five series, each reflecting a particular function of the BVCAC. Series 1 contains administrative material relating to the incorporation, governance, and management of the BVCAC. Series 2 contains applications for funding made by individual artists and community groups, whether directly to the BVCAC or to other organizations with the support of the BVCAC. Series 3 contains grant applications made by the BVCAC to outside organizations. Series 4 contains bursary applications to the BVCAC. Series 5 contains material related to events, projects, and programs put on by the BVCAC. This arrangement has been imposed by Bulkley Valley Museum staff, but original order has been adhered to as closely as possible.

- The Bulkley Valley District Hospital was first established in 1920 and occupied a pre-existing building on the corner of Second Avenue and King Street. It housed 13 beds, an operating room, an office, a kitchen and a dining area. The hospital continued to expand throughout the decade until 1933, when its ownership was transferred from the Hospital Board to the Sisters of St. Anne, and a new building was constructed. A 30-bed wing with an emergency operating room was added in 1955. By 1968, this building was ruled obsolete and work began on a new modern facility, to be run by the province after the Sisters relinquished control. The new Bulkley Valley District Hospital was opened in 1969. A major renovation project was launched in 1973 and the original 1934 building was demolished. The formation of the Bulkley Lodge Society through the Smithers Society of Concerned Citizens in 1982 replaced the need for extended care beds in the BV District Hospital. Today, the Hospital acts as an acute care facility with 25 beds, servicing communities from Houston to Hazelton, B.C. For more detailed information on the history and development of the Hospital, see finding aid.

Maskiewich then donated these records to the Archives.Three photographs (P7894-P7896) were found in collections in October 2020, having been submitted to the Interior News prior to 2003 and transferred to the museum at an unknown date.

- The Bulkley Valley Museum (BVM) was founded in large part by Ernest Hann, an early pioneer who amassed a large collection of documents, photographs and artifacts representing local settler history. This became the core collection upon which the Museum was built. The first public displays of artifacts opened in 1967 in the newly-constructed Smithers Public Library. However, it was not until 1971 that the Bulkley Valley Historical & Museum Society was officially incorporated. With space becoming limited in the Library, the Museum was moved in 1974 to the historic Central Park Building, which had once served as Smithers' government building, courthouse, and jail. The Museum first shared a room with the Smithers Art Gallery before receiving its own space. Today the BVM collects, preserves and presents items of historical and cultural significance from Smithers and the Bulkley Valley and is enjoyed by over 5000 people per year.
- Custodial History
- All items in this fonds were retained by the Museum as internal records following their initial creation and use, and were accessioned and entered into the OF1 fonds upon being found in collections.
- Scope and Content
- This fonds contains material created and used by the Bulkley Valley Museum during the course of its day-to-day activities, from the time of its inception as a historical society in the early 1960s up to and including the present. These are primarily textual records such as meeting minutes, staff reports, exhibit plans, correspondence, policies, financial documents, curator diaries, guest books, scrapbooks, and membership lists. The fonds also includes photographs, pamphlets, posters, floor plans, 1 CD of oral history recordings, and 2 videocassettes. Furthermore, there is an increasing amount of born-digital material (Word docs, PDFs, images) which have yet to be fully processed into the fonds.
- Arrangement
- This fonds was first arranged around 2018 by Manda Haligowski and was rearranged in spring 2021 by Holly Peterson. In its current form, the OF1 fonds is divided into nine series: - S1) Office of the Curator - S2) Board of Directors - S3) events and promotions - S4) Old Church - S5) guest books/lists - S6) scrapbooks - S7) maps and plans - S8) photographs - S9) audiovisual materials. Series 1, 2, 3, and 4 have been further subdivided into subseries and/or files; see their Arrangement fields for more details.
