- The Aidas were a Japanese-Canadian family who lived in Smithers during the 1920s-1940s. Kintaro Aida, born in Tokyo in 1888, immigrated to Canada in 1906 and married Sadako Fuseya-Wanibe, who had come to Canada from Japan in 1909. The couple had three sons in Prince Rupert - Tatsuo 'Tat' (b. 1916), Fujio 'Joe' (b. 1917), and Tetuso 'Ben' (b. 1919) - before moving to Smithers. Two more children - a son named Asao and a daughter named Sumiko - were born here in 1927 and 1929 respectively. Kintaro ran a tailor shop and rooming house, while Sadako managed a laundry. Sadako, Asao and Sumiko visited family in Japan shortly before the outbreak of World War II and were unable to return home until after the war. Asao got married in Japan and remained there. The rest of the Aida family moved to Stouffville, Ontario in the late 1940s. For more information, see finding aid.

- History / Biographical
- Alan Pickard was born and raised in New Zealand. He met his wife, Anne, while visiting Calgary en route to Europe. They moved to the Bulkley Valley in 1970, working here for a few months before moving to Kitimat for four years. Afterwards, they returned to Smithers and built a log cabin on Telkwa High Road. The two were frequent international travelers, dividing their time between the Bulkley Valley and locations such as Alaska, Saudi Arabia and New Zealand. Pickard began researching early settler history of the Bulkley Valley in 1998. He initially focused on the Telkwa High Road and the two telegraph lines that ran along it: the Collins Overland telegraph (1866) and the Yukon telegraph (1900). His interests then broadened to include early trails, roads and bridges, early (pre-1914) settlers, place names, and maps. Pickard’s use of original sources (books, archival records, etc.) in his research led to him collecting documents such as early mining claims, Hudson’s Bay Company and North West Company trading posts, and land surveys in the Bulkley Valley. Pickard’s research is a continuation of the work of other researchers, including local historian Lynn Shervill, author of “Smithers: From Swamp to Village,” and John Tupper Saywell. He also assisted Kate Smallwood with her book “Kate’s Selection,” published in 2005. In addition to his historical research, Pickard served as the Chairman of the Smithers Library Board, was a member of the Bulkley Valley Writers’ Group, contributed articles to the Interior News, staked mining claims, worked as an electrician, and wrote poetry (his volume being the first book printed by Bulkley Valley Printers). In 2005, Alan and Anne Pickard returned to New Zealand, where they currently reside.

- The Bulkley Lodge is a long-term assisted living facility in Smithers operated by Northern Health Authority. Founded by the Society of Concerned Citizens (incorporated 1973), the Lodge was officially opened on October 12, 1978 by B.C. Health Minister Bob McLelland. In 1982 the Society of Concerned Citizens was renamed the Bulkley Lodge Society in order to better reflect its goals of supporting the facility. Initially taking in personal care and immediate care residents, the Bulkley Lodge was licensed for 7 extended care residents in 1988; this number has since increased. The building underwent significant renovations throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. Today (2020), Bulkley Lodge cares for 70 residents across four units. It offers a central dining and activity room, a main lounge area, a self-serve coffee bar, a hair salon, and an exercise room. Residents are able to enjoy social activities, therapeutic recreation, spiritual programming, occupational therapy, and specialized nail and foot care. Some of the original board members included Bea Quadros, Pat McCammon, Jim and Margaret Goodacre, Ev Glass, Margaret Graham, Marguerite Perry, Mary Baker, Jim Robinson, Mel Burchette, Joe MacDonald, Flo Hidber, Audry Cook, Ron Kilby, Sid Beerda, Bill Bryant, Anna Morris, Johanna Huisman, Doris Stahel, Louise Kratz, Gary Lobley, R. Its work includes funding arts projects, providing bursaries to aspiring artists, and coordinating community events. Council membership includes local artists, musicians, vocalists, dancers, and community organizations. The BVCAC was officially incorporated under the Societies Act in March 1980, although its history dates back to at least the late 1960s.

- History / Biographical
- The Bulkley Valley Folk Music Society (BVFMS) is a Smithers-based non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and celebration of folk music within the Valley. It developed out of the Styx River Coffee House, a folk music organization coordinated by George and Norma Stokes in the late 1970s. Marion Rose and Kevin Widen sought to establish a yearly music festival and formed a new organization in order to run it. The BVFMS was officially incorporated in 1984, held its first general meeting on March 19th of that year, and joined the Bulkley Valley Community Arts Council in 1985. It has run the Midsummer Music Festival every year since its inception, with the exception of 2020, in which the smaller Midsummer Memories event was held instead. The Festival includes over 30 acts and draws over 3000 attendees from northwestern BC and beyond. In addition, the Bulkley Valley Folk Music Society holds two annual guitar camps for youth and adults, hosts the BVFMS Coffeehouse from October to April, awards bursaries to students pursuing post-secondary education in music or creative arts, and rents out sound equipment and a CD/DVD duplicator.
- Custodial History
- Items with accession number 2020.40 were donated to the Museum by Kevin Widen of the BVFMS on October 7th 2020. They were grouped together with 2020.7 to create the Bulkley Valley Folk Music Society fonds on October 8th.
- Scope and Content
- Fonds consists of a hard drive containing thousands of BVFMS photographs dated between 1984 and 2020.
- Arrangement
- The photographs on the hard drive have been arranged by donor Kevin Widen, with each year from 1984 to 2020 having its own folder. These folders typically include a small number of ‘selected’ photos, a large number of processed photos, a larger number of unprocessed photos, and sometimes a collection of top photos for the year. For most years, the unprocessed photo files are named beginning with the year, followed by the photographer’s initials, the film roll number, and the frame number. Scans of the BVFMS scrapbooks are included in some of the folders. Years 1984, 1985, 1991, 2007, and 2016-2019 include a selection of photos used in slideshows as well. See 2020/10/06 Note by Kevin Widen (accessions binder) or the ‘About these Photos’ document on the W Drive for further information on the photos.

- History / Biographical
- The Bulkley Valley Museum (BVM) was founded in large part by Ernest Hann, an early pioneer who amassed a large collection of documents, photographs and artifacts representing local settler history. This became the core collection upon which the Museum was built. The first public displays of artifacts opened in 1967 in the newly-constructed Smithers Public Library. However, it was not until 1971 that the Bulkley Valley Historical & Museum Society was officially incorporated. With space becoming limited in the Library, the Museum was moved in 1974 to the historic Central Park Building, which had once served as Smithers' government building, courthouse, and jail. The Museum first shared a room with the Smithers Art Gallery before receiving its own space. Today the BVM collects, preserves and presents items of historical and cultural significance from Smithers and the Bulkley Valley and is enjoyed by over 5000 people per year.
- Custodial History
- All items in this fonds were retained by the Museum as internal records following their initial creation and use, and were accessioned and entered into the OF1 fonds upon being found in collections.
- Scope and Content
- This fonds contains material created and used by the Bulkley Valley Museum during the course of its day-to-day activities, from the time of its inception as a historical society in the early 1960s up to and including the present. These are primarily textual records such as meeting minutes, staff reports, exhibit plans, correspondence, policies, financial documents, curator diaries, guest books, scrapbooks, and membership lists. The fonds also includes photographs, pamphlets, posters, floor plans, 1 CD of oral history recordings, and 2 videocassettes. Furthermore, there is an increasing amount of born-digital material (Word docs, PDFs, images) which have yet to be fully processed into the fonds.
- Arrangement
- This fonds was first arranged around 2018 by Manda Haligowski and was rearranged in spring 2021 by Holly Peterson. In its current form, the OF1 fonds is divided into nine series: - S1) Office of the Curator - S2) Board of Directors - S3) events and promotions - S4) Old Church - S5) guest books/lists - S6) scrapbooks - S7) maps and plans - S8) photographs - S9) audiovisual materials. Series 1, 2, 3, and 4 have been further subdivided into subseries and/or files; see their Arrangement fields for more details.

- History / Biographical
- Harry Kruisselbrink was born in the Netherlands in 1941 in the early part of World War II. The family immigrated to Canada in 1951 and lived in Barrett Lake just west of Houston. They moved to Smithers in 1952. Starting in 1955, he spent 40 years working in the communications industry, all of it in northern British Columbia. He met his wife Audrey in 1963; they were married in 1965 and had three children. He retired from the communications industry in 1995. Harry’s interest in local history began in his High School years. His teacher, Lee Curley, was able to convey his enthusiasm for history onto his students, including Harry. At about that same time Harry received a camera as a Christmas gift and since then rarely goes anywhere without it. In 1969, he became a founding member of the Smithers environmental group called SPEC. He joined the local air search and rescue group in 1972. The following year he was elected to Smithers Town Council and served three two-year terms. After retiring from Council, he continued to serve on the Town’s Planning Committee for many years. His wife and he were foster parents for 27 years. Harry was a member of the Smithers’ 60th Anniversary Committee that published the book, “Smithers from Swamp to Village,” written by author Lynn Shervill. Harry has written a number of historical sketches including a book “Smithers – A Railroad Town” and “Beyond the Call of Duty – The Adventurous Life of Rev. F. L. Stephenson”. Kruisselbrink died in Smithers on May 2nd 2022.
