The Bulkley Lodge is a long-term assisted living facility in Smithers operated by Northern Health Authority. Founded by the Society of Concerned Citizens (incorporated 1973), the Lodge was officially opened on October 12, 1978 by B.C. Health Minister Bob McLelland. In 1982 the Society of Concerned Citizens was renamed the Bulkley Lodge Society in order to better reflect its goals of supporting the facility. Initially taking in personal care and immediate care residents, the Bulkley Lodge was licensed for 7 extended care residents in 1988; this number has since increased. The building underwent significant renovations throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. Today (2020), Bulkley Lodge cares for 70 residents across four units. It offers a central dining and activity room, a main lounge area, a self-serve coffee bar, a hair salon, and an exercise room. Residents are able to enjoy social activities, therapeutic recreation, spiritual programming, occupational therapy, and specialized nail and foot care. Some of the original board members included Bea Quadros, Pat McCammon, Jim and Margaret Goodacre, Ev Glass, Margaret Graham, Marguerite Perry, Mary Baker, Jim Robinson, Mel Burchette, Joe MacDonald, Flo Hidber, Audry Cook, Ron Kilby, Sid Beerda, Bill Bryant, Anna Morris, Johanna Huisman, Doris Stahel, Louise Kratz, Gary Lobley, R. McIntyre, and Florence Oulton.

The first official meeting of a saddle club in Smithers occurred on February 6th 1960, when over thirty riders met under the leadership of Obie Helps. This club formally named itself the Northern Saddle Club in 1964. With the goal of promoting equestrian activities in the Bulkley Valley, the NSC organized local events such as horse racing, trail rides, competitions, clinics, gymkhanas, and visits to the Bulkley Lodge. It also held public fundraisers such as dances, raffles, picnics, and sports days. The Club has been involved with the Fall Fair since its formation, participating in the parade, holding horse-related events, loaning equipment, and helping develop the fairgrounds. The Northern Saddle Club continues its contributions to the equestrian community of the Bulkley Valley as of 2020, supporting all disciplines and equine-related activities for horse-lovers. Description
Carved wooden frame with round circles across the top and half circles down the sides. There are three wooden stars, one in each corner. A fourth star is missing from the bottom left hand corner. The wood has been stained, and gold paint applied for decoration. Framed inside is a picture of men and women caroling at a street light, with the words "Our Christmas Waits" written at the bottom. There is a hinged folding stand at the back of the framed, this may have been added at a later date as it is a different wood than the rest of the frame. The picture inside is taped in. It reads "E. Hann / Framed Jan 21 1963".
History Of Use
Item was reputedly made by an unnamed rancher at Chicken Lake (Lake Kathlyn) out of an apple box. It was whittled with a jack knife. The frame was raffled by the Red Cross during the First World War as a fundraiser. It was won by Martin Dahl and then later given to Granny Bannister in 1914.
