- Description
- The frame of this bone crusher consists of three legs at the bottom which is fastened to a malleable piece of iron. This piece of iron encapsulates the axle. Above the axle, the malleable piece of iron divides into two pieces. Each piece has a hole through the top where a metal rod is located. The same rod is fastened to the large flywheel. The flywheel consists of a 54cm diam. wheel with a 12cm wooden handle. The same side has "JOLIET ILL., HUMPHREY & SONS" embossed and "4" imprinted on it. The other side of the wheel has a small gear fastened in the center of it. This small gear sits upon a larger gear that is fastened to the axle. The other side of the axle has an iron disk attached to it. One side of the disk has ridges while the other side is smooth. Three evenly spaced slits run from the center of the disk to the rim. Each slit has a blade fastened to one side. Beside the disk is a hopper with indecipherable letters on the face of it. The rim of the hopper is a separate piece of malleable iron. One part of the rim is ridged then it extends over the disk then onto the iron rod that's attached to the flywheel. A curved knob is attached near the end on top. A metal door that is shaped like the hopper is connected to part of the rim. It also connects to a wheel with a gear attached to the middle. This gear over along the ridged rim when the wheel turns. When the wheel turns the door also moves in the same direction. The face of the door has "PAT JULY 3, 1900, CANADA PATENTED 1901"
- Narrative
- 'Farm Tools' by Michael Partridge, p.179
- History Of Use
- This bone crusher was used to grind up animal bones to make bone meal for fertilizer. This was a common practice still in the early 1900's until commercial fertilizer became more readily available. Bone crushers such as this one were used by farmers because animal bones were readily available on the farm and therefore were an inexpensive form of fertilizer. This bone crusher was used on the Bayson farm which was established in the late 1800's by an uncle of Fred Bayson. Fred took over the farm upon the death of his uncle in 1924 and worked at farming in the Bulkley Valley until his death in 1979.

- The Booster Bulkley was published monthly, covering social activities and school life from Rose Lake to Barrett. The first issue was published on November 22, 1923. The original editorial committee consisted of representatives from different districts of the Bulkley Valley: community leader Reverend L. Clinton Johnson (Convener), and schoolteachers Miss E.G. Stratton (Houston), Miss R.O. Stewart (North Bulkley), J. Ronald Todd (Topley), Frank Rendle (Forestdale) and Miss G. Keith (Rose Lake). The Interior News of July 30th 1924 reported that “The popular young pastor and the school teachers … undertook the publishing of a community newspaper, which … carried the boosting beyond the name and each month breathed optimism.” In spring 1924, the Booster staff also held a series of concerts/dances throughout the District, appearing at Topley, Houston, Forestdale and Decker Lake. The Booster had a short run, with only seven issues ever published, but reportedly enjoyed great success among its audience. Proceeds from sales of the paper were used to start a school library in Houston.

- Talk of forming a Bulkley Valley Agricultural Association to oversee the planning of an exhibition began in 1910 (Interior News, May 1910). Various names were used before incorporation, such as: Bulkley Valley Agricultural Association (Interior News, July 27, 1912), Bulkley Valley Agricultural Association and Farmer’s Institute (Omineca Herald, June 7, 1913) and Bulkley Valley Agricultural and Industrial Exhibition Association (Interior News, June 21, 1919). On July 14, 1919, the Bulkley Valley Agricultural and Industrial Association was incorporated under the Agricultural Act. The mandate of the Association was to "advance the interests of agriculture and to hold an annual exhibition of agricultural products at Smithers, and to do all such other things the directors may decide for the advancement of the association, the farmers and farming." The first directors of the Association included A. Kilpatrick (President, Smithers), J. G. Wood (Vice-President, Telkwa), and L.B. Warner (Secretary Treasurer, Smithers), George Oulton (Smithers), A. J. Prudhomme (Telkwa), E. C. Barger (Telkwa) and William S. Henry (Smithers) (Interior News, June 21, 1919). Smithers held its first Fall Fair in Albert Park, September 30th, 1919. After several years the Fair became a three-day event, presenting a wide variety of exhibits including agricultural displays, livestock and logging shows, handicraft and homemaking exhibits, stage shows, and a midway. The Fair continues to this day, having been held every year since 1919, except for 1932-1933, 1938-1945, 1950-1952. A virtual fair was held in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic.

- In the early 1990s, the Morice-Bulkley Heritage & Museum Society attempted to establish an open-air museum at Four Seasons Park, near Houston. Heritage buildings and large artifacts from the surrounding area were transported to the site and intended to be restored to their original state. However, various issues brought construction to a halt by the end of 1991. After a brief return to the project in the late 90s and early 2000s, the Four Seasons site was abandoned and several of the buildings were moved to a park at the corner of Highway 16 and Benson Ave.

- History / Biographical
- In the early 1990s, the Morice-Bulkley Heritage & Museum Society attempted to establish an open-air museum at Four Seasons Park, near Houston. Heritage buildings and large artifacts from the surrounding area were transported to the site and intended to be restored to their original state. However, various issues brought construction to a halt by the end of 1991. After a brief return to the project in the late 90s and early 2000s, the Four Seasons site was abandoned and several of the buildings were moved to a park at the corner of Highway 16 and Benson Ave.
