History / Biographical
William 'Bill' Dungate was born in Vernon in 1909 and moved to Houston with his family as a young boy. The Dungates ran a farm in the area for 10 years before moving to Prince Rupert. Bill returned to Houston as an adult with his wife, Betty (nee Aitken) and they raised their daughter, Nora, on a farm near town. In addition to farming, Bill worked in the logging industry, as a weatherman for the Forest Service, and as a community photographer. He also collected and restored many historic photographs from the Houston area. Betty played a major role in the development of the Women's Institute and the recording of Houston's history in the book "Marks on the Forest Floor." Bill recieved the Queen's Jubilee Medal for his contributions to the community in 1978, and both he and Betty were declared Freemen of Houston in 1985. Bill Dungate died in 1993 and Betty in 2004. (For more detailed info, see Finding Aid).
Custodial History
The photographs, prints, negatives, and slides in this fonds were all created or collected by Bill Dungate during his lifetime. Many of the older negatives (pre-1960s) are reproductions of historic photographs lent to him by locals for copying, whereas many of the newer ones (1960s onwards) appear to have been taken by Dungate himself. The textual records were likely produced by the Houston Centennial '71 Committee. These items eventually came into the ownership of Dino Laramee, who donated them to the Bulkley Valley Museum on two dates; one prior to 2020 and the other August 12th 2021. All items have been consolidated under the accession number 2021.23.
Scope and Content
This fonds contains hundreds of photographs, prints, negatives, and slides depicting people, places, and events in the history of Houston and the surrounding area from the early 1910s and early 1990s. It also includes 22 pages of typewritten notes about Houston's early history.
Arrangement
Fonds has been arranged into two series: S1) Visual records, and S2) Textual records.

History / Biographical
Houston-area residents and former classmates Bill Dungate and Betty Aitken were married in 1935. From Marks of a Century: A History of Houston, B.C., pg. 67: "The wedding was almost a mishap, since it was to take place in Prince Rupert where Bill was living, and Betty, who was still in Houston, was unable to travel to the coast because heavy rains had washed out the tracks. However, eventually the train came through, and Betty and Bill were married a few days later than originally planned." The couple remained in Prince Rupert until 1943, when they returned to Houston.
Custodial History
Reproduced from the original photo by Bill Dungate on November 20th 1980. It came into the possession of Dino Laramie sometime after Dungate's death and was donated by him to the Museum prior to 2020, along with a large number of other Dungate prints and slides. The 'Ruggles' were presumably George Ruggles and family, who lived in or near Houston in the late 1920s/early 1930s and were good friends of the Dungates. (Mr. and Mrs. Ruggles' two children, Ruth and George Jr., would have been teenagers in 1932 and may not be in the photograph).
Jack Reynolds (son of Fred Reynolds) married Alecta Fern Simpson in Smithers in 1929 and had two children, Bill and Joyce, who may be in the photograph.
