History / Biographical
Donald Simpson began prospecting on Hudson Bay Mountain in the early 1900s with his brother James, in an area now known as Simpson's Gulch. He acquired the Victory Group of claims around 1906 and the Empire Group around 1909. Donald's wife Mary assisted him with this work after their marriage in 1915. The Empire Group was partially sold to Axel Elmstead in 1934, and eventually fully sold by Mary sometime after Donald's death in 1936. The Victory Group remained in the Simpson family until 2019.

Series includes letters, reports, records, and maps relating to the Simpson family’s mining operations on Hudson Bay Mountain.
Arrangement
Fonds has been divided into subseries reflecting the Simpsons’ two groups of mining claims: SS1) Victory Group and SS2) Empire Group. Items not in either subseries include: an undated reference book of mining information handwritten by Donald Simpson, and a July 9th 1930 letter from Donald Simpson to Hon. W.A. McKenzie, Minister of Mines, regarding the maintenance of mining roads.

Donald and Mary Simpson moved to Smithers shortly after their marriage in 1915 and made a home at Lot 37, Block 75. In addition to their mining operations, both members of the couple had artistic pursuits: Mary painted pastels and played musical instruments, while Donald wrote poetry and short stories.

Items in accession 2020.39 were in the ownership of the Simpson family for many years before being donated by Elizabeth Cameron, granddaughter of James Simpson, on October 2nd 2020. The photocopies of Mary Simpson's memoirs (1983.56) were donated by Cameron Bordon in 1983 and were part of the BVM discrete items collection before being transferred to the new Simpson family fonds.
