Date Range

Custodial History
Negatives numbered 2020.6 were discovered in binders in the Old Works Yard in April 2020. They were likely part of a large donation from the Interior News which had been received by the museum in 2007. Photographs and negatives numbered 2020.36 and 2021.1 were found in collections while cleaning out Room 6 in the fall/winter of 2020-2021. These photos had either been taken by Interior News reporters or submitted by readers for publication in the paper. They had also likely been donated to the Museum in 2007.
Scope and Content
Series includes 850 photographs, mainly in colour, which appeared in, were taken for, or were submitted to, the Interior News between the 1980s and early 2000s. It also includes negatives of Interior News photos from the late 1960s until the early 2000s.
Arrangement
Most of the items from 2020.36 and 2021.1 were found grouped in individual envelopes based on their subject and the date they appeared in the paper. Others were found in envelopes arranged alphabetically by the surname of the person who submitted the photos. This original order has not been retained, as only a small representative portion of the thousands of photographs originally discovered in Room 6 were kept by the museum, with the rest being returned to their donors or disposed of. The photos are now arranged by their P Numbers, which were assigned based on the order in which they were scanned. Digital photos which were found on CDs have been kept in their original order, though only a small sample have been retained. The physical CDs have been disposed of. The negatives are arranged in files according to the year, month, and (sometimes) date in which they appear in the Interior News.

History / Biographical
Efforts to renovate Hazelton's Old Town in a pioneer style began in 1975 with a plan prepared for the Hazelton Area Historical Association and the Kitimat-Stikine Regional District by two UBC architecture students. The stockade and sign in this photo were erected at the end of summer 1975, with the intention of updating the sign every time a new phase was passed. (Interior News, August 3rd 1977, pg. 18).
