History Of Use
The cross was used in a graveside ceremony at the Smithers Cemetery on October 5th 2018 to commemorate Lieutenant Leslie Peveril Sutcliffe. Sutcliffe attended the Sedbergh School as a young man. The ceremony was part of a project by the school to mark the First World War centennial and honour alumni that were killed in the war by visiting and holding a small ceremony at their graves. Robert Hamer, an alumni of the school, visited Smithers from Alberta to conduct the ceremony. BV Museum Curator Kira Westby, Royal Canadian Legion (Smithers branch) padre Doug Campbell, and members of the Bulkley Valley Genealogical Society including then-president Sharon Eastabrook participated in the ceremony. The cross was used in the ceremony, and then given to the BV Museum to preserve.
