History / Biographical
The Bulkley Valley Museum was founded in large part by Ernest Hann, an early pioneer of the Bulkley Valley. Ernest was one of several local residents who had been slowly amassing a collection of documents, photographs and artifacts representing early settler history in the Valley. These personal collections became the core collection upon which the Museum was founded. A shift towards not only collecting, but also displaying materials came in 1967 when the Museum’s first public displays opened in the newly constructed Smithers Public Library, a centennial project for the Town of Smithers. In 1971 the Museum was officially incorporated under the Society’s Act of British Columbia as the Bulkley Valley Historical & Museum Society. In 1974 as space became limited in the Library, the Museum was moved to the Central Park Building, a heritage building constructed in 1925 as the government building and courthouse. The Museum first shared space in the Central Park Building with the Smithers Art Gallery, later moving to its own space on the first floor. Today the Museum collects, preserves and presents items of historical and cultural significance from Smithers and the Bulkley Valley and is enjoyed by over 5000 people per year.

History / Biographical
The Old Church was first constructed in 1913 as the St. James’ Anglican Church. For over sixty years it served as a spiritual and community centre for the growing village of Smithers. After the parish of St. James moved to its new home on Princess St. in 1975, the original church was left unused and suffered disrepair and neglect. In 2005, thanks to the dedication and vision of a dynamic group of volunteers, the building was resurrected as a community hall. The Old Church Garden was developed in 2006 as a public green space. Administered and maintained by the Bulkley Valley Museum, today the Old Church is a popular venue for dozens of weddings, lectures, parties, meetings, concerts, and performances each year.
Custodial History
Items marked 2018.15, consisting of Old Church meeting minutes, first came to the Archives in a binder organized by year and became File 1 of this series. At some point, Bulkley Valley Museum meeting minutes and financial statements - some relating to the Old Church and others not - were added to this folder in chronological order. In April 2020 when new accessions were added, these additional BVM materials were reviewed and removed to other S6 files if relevant to the Old Church and other OF1 series if not. The multi-file arrangement was also created in April 2020.
Scope and Content
Series consists of meeting minutes, financial records, reports, correspondence, promotional material, concept art, and architectural and technical drawings relating to the renovation, reopening, and usage of the Old Church and its Garden in the early 2000s. Most material dates from 2003-2005.
Arrangement
The Series is divided into seven Files: - F1 Old Church meeting minutes - F2 Old Church financials - F3 Old Church promotional material - F4 BVM-related Old Church material - F5 Old Church projects - F6 Old Church garden - F7 Old Church drawings
