Bolsward refers to a city in the Netherlands, located in the north-western province of Friesland. This province is known for its skating culture.‘G.S. Ruiter’ refers to the name Geert Stevens Ruiter, a successful skate manufacturer whose company produced skates from 1889 to 1970; this particular blacksmith mark places the skate manufacturing date somewhere between 1901 and 1940. The Ruiter brand was not only popular amongst the public but also amongst the Dutch royalty.

Description
Two ice skates, wood base with inset metal blade. The wood base is wider where the skater's foot would sit, and then becomes more narrow past the toe. Each skate has a leather strap at the ankle-end that would secure the skater's ankle. The strap has metal components (ring, eyelet) that would have made it adjustable. There is a second set of adjustable leather straps at the toe of each skate. Each skate is stamped with G.S. RUITER, BOLSWARD. The skates are known as the "Friesland" style.
