History / Biographical
Ron Gilbert recalls that despite the Gilbert farm having a spring, extra water had to be brought from the creek in the summer so that the livestock would not drink it dry. The water was carried in empty milk cans.
Custodial History
Item was donated to the museum at some point before 2005, when it was scanned. In November 2018, two oral history interviews were held with Ron Gilbert, Janice Gilbert, Tony L'Orsa and assistant curator Erik Holdijk, in which information about the photographs was provided. Photos were formally accessioned and given database entries in May 2020.

History / Biographical
Joseph (Joe) Allen L’Orsa (1939-1999) was a prominent figure in the Bulkley Valley, best known for his environmental activism and community involvement. He is credited with starting the area’s first environmental group, “Citizens Against Pollution,” and establishing Babine Mountains Provincial Park. For more detailed information, see fonds level description or finding aid.
Custodial History
Maps and photographs were collected and created by Joe L’Orsa and eventually passed down to his daughter, Nicole L’Orsa. She donated them to the Bulkley Valley Museum in 2018.
Scope and Content
Series consists of local, regional, and provincial maps collected by Joe L’Orsa, as well as four architectural drawings. The maps are grouped into the following files: Smithers (5 maps), Driftwood Creek (5 maps), misc. local (9 maps), provincial (2 maps), mining claims and surveys (17 maps), aerial photo maps (7), and Axel Elmstead’s historic maps (4). The architectural drawings date from 1967 and depict plans for a sawmill complex in Witset and apartment buildings in Smithers.

History / Biographical
Pauline Margaret 'Peggy' Clarke, originally from Bromley, Kent, moved to the Bulkley Valley with her husband Chas in 1954. Chas had been stationed in Canada with the RAF during World War II and had always wanted to return. He taught at Driftwood School for the 1954-1955 season, after which the Clarkes moved to Smithers.
Custodial History
Item was sent by Peggy Clarke (then living in Salmon Arm) to the Interior News in November 2011 and from there made its way to the Museum, where it was kept in a reference file until being removed and accessioned in August 2020.
Scope and Content
File contains a 5-page memoir by Peggy Clarke about her time living at Driftwood Creek in the mid-1950s. It comes with an introductory letter from Clarke to the Interior News.

The Gilbert farm, located northeast of Smithers, was run by the Gilbert family starting in 1919. After Frank Gilbert's death in 1951 it was taken over by his son-in-law, John Schroeder.
