History / Biographical
The Bulkley Valley Brass Band was founded in October 1970 after an unsuccessful attempt by the Smithers Rotary Club to form a community brass band. Whereas membership in the Rotary Band had been restricted to Smithers residents, the Bulkley Valley Brass Band widened its scope by welcoming members from Telkwa and Houston. It also sought to ensure its longevity by purchasing instruments which would be held by the band rather than by individual members, allowing them to be passed on to new members if their original users left the group or moved away. Anyone above the age of 12 was able to join, regardless of skill level. The BVBB’s director at its time of founding was Norman Atkins and its treasurer was Paul Sikkes, who also played trumpet for the band. The BVBB’s held its first concert, “An Evening at Home,” on December 12th 1970. It went on to participate in events such as Christmas Concerts, the Lakes District Music Festival, and the 1971 BC Centennial Celebrations Parade. The band won a great number of prizes in various music festivals. It was directed by Norm Atkins from 1970 until his death in early 1974. By January 1981 the band was in a state of abeyance due to a lack of local brass players. It does not appear to have been restarted.
Custodial History
Item 2011.39.01 was originally donated to the museum by Judi Adema in February 2011 and accessioned as part of the BVM discrete items collection. In June 2020 it was removed from this collection and added to the newly-created Bulkley Valley Brass Band fonds. Items numbered 2017.133 were originally collected by Jeanette Lough and eventually passed on to Ronald Toews, who donated them to the museum on December 8, 2017. They were added to the Smithers Community Band fonds (AF12). In June 2020 it was determined that they were not relevant to the fond topic and a separate fonds was created for the Bulkley Valley Brass Band.

History / Biographical
The Houston News first appeared as a section of the Interior News. It ran in this format until April 10th 1969, when it began to be published as an independent weekly newspaper in Houston. Owned by the Houston News Company, it was printed in Smithers by North Central Press Ltd. A free copy of the first edition was mailed to every resident of Houston. Editions up until May 29th were available for free in local stores; following this, they were sold for 10¢ a copy or $2.00 for a yearly subscription. Beginning on August 21st, the title was changed to the Weekend Journal and publication switched from Thursday to Friday. This ultimately proved unsuccessful and the paper ceased to be produced independently after August 29th due to low readership and lack of funds. Houston news continued to be reported in the Interior News until the publication of Houston Today in the 1980s.

History / Biographical
The name Vera Frank is written on the back of photograph. Vera was the eldest of three daughters born to Scottish settlers Archibald ("Archie") McInnes (1861-1951) and Jessie (nee Aitken) McInnes (1886-1972). Their other two daughters were Ivy and Neva. Archie and his brother Neil worked on the Yukon Telegraph Line and bought land on the North Bulkley in 1904. Archie married Jessie on October 25, 1905 and they named their property Pioneer Ranch. Vera (1908-1999) married Ivan R. Frank (1903-1966) in 1934. Vera and Ivan had two sons, Donald (b. 1943) and Gordon (b. 1946). Vera, her parents, and her husband are buried in Kitsumgallum Cemetary in Terrace. Ivy (1909-2001) married Eric G. Strimbold (1897-1969) in 1929. They had two sons (Archie and Frank) and one daughter (Linda). Ivy and Eric are both buried in Topley Cemetary. Neva (1913-2000) married CNR employee John Nickolichuk (1913-1983). They had two sons (Jack and Innes) and one daughter (Jennifer). Neva and John both passed away in Victoria.

Notes
Photo is set on frame of black cardboard labeled with "Eyres, Victoria, B.C." Vera Frank's name is written on the back but the style of the dress looks like early 1900s. Likely her parents' wedding in 1905. This would also explain the difference in age as Archie was 25 years older than Jessie. The dress is also part of the Museum's collection (1987.57.29), donated by Archie Strimbold.
