Description
Metal currycomb with wooden handle. This currycomb has three metal pieces at the bottom that have been bent to form six rows of corrugated edges. Two elongated pieces of metal that make up the sides of the comb have been riveted on top of the ends of the scraping edges. Imprinted on both pieces of elongated metal is 'MCKINNON, ST. CATHERINES, COLUMBUS, ONT.'. A metal bar with spikes extends from one end of the elongated metal piece to the other metal piece which has been riveted on top, this is called the mane comb. A wire brace, which is one piece, extends from the handle over and through the scraping edges and back to the handle again. The handle is round and bulges at the center then tapers to a metal collar at one end. The other end has an oval piece of wire sticking out of it, this is called an eyelet.
History Of Use
Currycomb used for grooming horses. A comb such as this one was advertised for use in the 1902 Sears Catalogue. p. 413. This currycomb was found in the Blacksmith shop at the Bayson farm on Newens Road which had been established in the late 1800's.
