History Of Use
This red blanket is typical of the ones sold by the Hudson's Bay Company that was located in the Bulkley Valley. Blankets like these were used by trappers, hunters, travellers by canoe, dog sled, and by Engineers and Surveyors. Letters from 1981 and 1982 from Ruth Nelson Berry state that the blanket was given to her parents, Edward and Cecilia Nelson in lieu of payment for a room by an elderly prospector who boarded with them in Smithers in 1913. The Nelson house was build on what would become 3719 Alfred Avenue and was still standing in 1981. P1182 features Nelson's wedding photograph.
