History Of Use
Chief Thomas George 1892-1974. Mary Wells George 1900-1981. Thomas was known as 'Gisdewe' and was a house chief of the Gidimt'en Clan of the Witsuwit'en. Mary was known as 'T'say-bay-sah', (Lady of the Moon). They lived in the Owen Lake area. Thomas trapped extensively and worked on the Grand Trunk Railway. Mary did leather crafts, farming, trapping, fishing and traditional food preparation. These snowshoes were made by Chief Thomas. The frame is made from Maple Leaf willow and the strappings from moose hide 'babiche' in the centre and caribou hide 'babiche' on the tops and bottom. The ends of the snowshoe are boiled so just the ends bend. The middle pieces hold the frame apart. The Maple Leaf willow grows up along the Telkwa High Road toward Morricetown and points west. Snowshoes were used in the winter to make walking easier in deep snow while hunting, trapping and ice fishing.
