Custodial History
Negatives numbered 2020.6 were discovered in binders in the Old Works Yard in April 2020. They were likely part of a large donation from the Interior News which had been received by the museum in 2007. Photographs and negatives numbered 2020.36 were found in collections while cleaning out Room 6 in Fall 2020. These photos had either been taken by Interior News reporters or submitted by readers for publication in the paper. They had also likely been donated to the Museum in 2007.
Scope and Content
Series includes hundreds of photographs, mainly in colour, which appeared in, were taken for, or were submitted to, the Interior News between the 1980s and early 2000s. It also includes negatives of Interior News photos from [the 1970s] until [the early 2000s].
Arrangement
Most of the items from 2020.36 were found grouped in individual envelopes based on their subject and the date they appeared in the paper. Others were found in envelopes arranged alphabetically by the surname of the person who submitted the photos. This original order has not been retained, as only a small representative portion of the thousands of photographs originally discovered in Room 6 were kept by the museum, with the rest being returned to their donors or disposed of. The photos are now arranged by their P Numbers, which were assigned based on the order in which they were scanned. The negatives are arranged in files according to the year, month, and (sometimes) date in which they appear in the Interior News.

History / Biographical
Although it was initially established in 1907 as the newspaper for the nearby community of Aldermere, the Interior News transferred to Smithers in 1915 with Joseph Coyle as the editor. He remained editor until 1918 when the newspaper was sold to Lawrence Beverly (L. B.) Warner (nee Nyland), who published the paper out of his house in Smithers with the help of his wife, Margaret “Peg” Warner. In its initial years, the paper was hand set, five pages long, and cost ten cents. After Warner’s death on February 25, 1940, his wife, Margaret, and son, Kenneth (Ken) Warner, continued to publish the paper. Ken Warner sold the paper to Bill Yorke-Hardy, Keith Marshall, and Gary White, of North Central Press. In 1981, North Central Press sold The Interior News to Black Press, which still owns the paper to this day. For more detailed information, see Finding Aid.

The family left for southern California in August 1927 due to the ill health of Muriel's sister Doris. She returned to Smithers for the first time for a visit in 1970. In 1996 she wrote to the Interior News for Smithers' 75th anniversary, giving her recollections of life in town.
