Description
A large, black, cast iron stove. The stove's trim and fittings are of a shiny, silver-colored metal. It has a high back, the corners of which are decorated with thick, curved metal moldings. The back features two warming ovens with white-enameled doors bordered with a black metal trim. Between these ovens is a round vent hole with a tin plate cover. Below this screwed to the frames, is a thick metal plate with a short projection at the bottom of each side. At the center of this plate is a round, embossed design of an Indian head with "BY HURON" and "STOVES & RANGES" and a banner below with "REGISTERED". Around and below this design is "DESIGN REGISTERED TRADEMARK ON EVERY PIECE AND IS YOUR GUARANTEE" and "THE WESTERN FOUNDRY CO. LIMITER, WINGHAM, ONT." On each side, between the top ovens and the stove face, is a scrolled metal brace. The chimney, which is situated at the center back, has a vent at the center, consisting of a small lever surrounded by a thick, metal molding in a stylized floral design. The main top of the stove is formed of three rectangular sections, each having two removable stove lids and one rectangular shaped center with curved sides to accommodate round removable stove lids. One lid is cracked. The front lid on the left-hand side is composed of three separate sections which fit nestled together. The front edge of the stove has metal trim. At the back main top of the stove is a small ever which controls a vent. Above this is marked "SHUT" and "OPEN". On opposite side is "9 2 D". At each corner of stove is a small, rounded piece of metal with a hole in the center. The doors of the fire box, ash box and oven are bordered with wide metal trim. The front of the fire box features a larger version of the Indian head trademark, with a small rosette on either side. The knob on this door is missing. Below this, the front of the grate reads "THE WESTERN FD'Y CO. LIMITER, WINGHAM, ONT.". The door to the ash box features a large metal plate of the letters "O" and "H". This door has a round shiny metal knob. The center of the oven door features a thick, curved metal name plate with "OLD HOMESTEAD" embossed on it. Below this, inset in the metal, is a round temperature gauge. The oven door has one knob on the top of the left side, a remnant of a larger handle. Beneath the oven is a small, rectangular plate covering the opening for ash clean-out. It reads the same as the front of the grate. On the left side of the stove is a large, closed vent for the grate. On the right side, attached to the frame above the stove top is a round trivet with a star-shaped pattern of spokes. There is an ash box beneath the grate and one rack in the oven.
History Of Use
Large kitchen stove is cast iron and chrome plated. It was bought in 1917 for $35.00 at a second hand store.
