History / Biographical
Allan Kilpatrick and his wife and family moved to Prince Rupert, B.C. during the construction of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (GTP). Allan was the Superintendent of the GTP Western Division from 1917 to 1920 and was very active in the Bulkley Valley community, serving as a member of the Smithers Citizens Association, the first president of the Bulkley Valley Agricultural and Industrial Association, and the first elected Worshipful Master of the Freemasons. However, when the GTP went bankrupt and was taken over by Canadian National Railways, the job of Superintendent was abolished in 1920 and Allan left Smithers.
Allan’s son Norman served overseas with the Royal Flying Corps during World War I, returning to his family in Smithers in 1919. In 1923, Norman married Jean Kilpatrick (nee Grant, b. 1898). Born in La Grande, Oregon, Jean arrived in the Bulkley Valley in 1910 where she worked at the Union Bank as Smithers’ first female bank teller. Together the couple had four children: Norman Jr., Allan Jr., Bill, and Jean Jr. Norman and Jean were very involved in community affairs in the Bulkley Valley; Norman was a member of the Great War Veteran’s Association and the Smithers Rotary Club, while Jean was a member of the Fall Fair committee, the Canadian Red Cross, and the Bulkley Valley Hospital Auxiliary. Norman passed away in 1969 and Jean in 1997. Of their four children, Jean (Maskiewich) and Bill remained in the Bulkley Valley.
