History / Biographical
Harry Kruisselbrink was born in the Netherlands in 1941 in the early part of World War II. The family immigrated to Canada in 1951 and lived in Barrett Lake just west of Houston. They moved to Smithers in 1952. Starting in 1955, he spent 40 years working in the communications industry, all of it in northern British Columbia. He met his wife Audrey in 1963; they were married in 1965 and had three children. He retired from the communications industry in 1995. Harry’s interest in local history began in his High School years. His teacher, Lee Curley, was able to convey his enthusiasm for history onto his students, including Harry. At about that same time Harry received a camera as a Christmas gift and since then rarely goes anywhere without it. In 1969, he became a founding member of the Smithers environmental group called SPEC. He joined the local air search and rescue group in 1972. The following year he was elected to Smithers Town Council and served three two-year terms. After retiring from Council, he continued to serve on the Town’s Planning Committee for many years. His wife and he were foster parents for 27 years. Harry was a member of the Smithers’ 60th Anniversary Committee that published the book, “Smithers from Swamp to Village,” written by author Lynn Shervill. Harry has written a number of historical sketches including a book “Smithers – A Railroad Town” and “Beyond the Call of Duty – The Adventurous Life of Rev. F. L. Stephenson”.

First resident minister of the Methodist Church was Reverand Charles E. Batzold, who directed construction of the first Methodist Church in Smithers in 1913 on Main Street. The church was offically dedicated November 30 1913, and provided the classroom for the first public school from 1913-1914. The building was destroyed in 1914 and a new church was built at the corner of Broadway and Queen in 1915. In 1925 the congregation became part of the United Church of Canada. A Lake Kathlyn property was purchased in 1930 by the Women's Guild. The church built in 1925 served the congregation until 1952. It was destroyed by fire in 1976. A new church built at the corner of Queen St. and 8th Avenue was dedicated on April 19 1953. From 1988-2002 the United Church and Lutheran Church had a joint congregation.

History / Biographical
Although it was initially established in 1907 as the newspaper for the nearby community of Aldermere, the Interior News transferred to Smithers in 1915 with Joseph Coyle as the editor. He remained editor until 1918 when the newspaper was sold to Lawrence Beverly (L. B.) Warner (nee Nyland), who published the paper out of his house in Smithers with the help of his wife, Margaret “Peg” Warner. In its initial years, the paper was hand set, five pages long, and cost ten cents. After Warner’s death on February 25, 1940, his wife, Margaret, and son, Kenneth (Ken) Warner, continued to publish the paper. Ken Warner sold the paper to Bill Yorke-Hardy, Keith Marshall, and Gary White, of North Central Press. In 1979, North Central Press sold The Interior News to Black Press, which still owns the paper to this day.

History / Biographical
The Bulkley Valley Museum was founded in large part by Ernest Hann, an early pioneer of the Bulkley Valley. Ernest was one of several local residents who had been slowly amassing a collection of documents, photographs and artifacts representing early settler history in the Valley. These personal collections became the core collection upon which the Museum was founded. A shift towards not only collecting, but also displaying materials came in 1967 when the Museum’s first public displays opened in the newly constructed Smithers Public Library, a centennial project for the Town of Smithers. In 1971 the Museum was officially incorporated under the Society’s Act of British Columbia as the Bulkley Valley Historical & Museum Society. In 1974 as space became limited in the Library, the Museum was moved to the Central Park Building, a heritage building constructed in 1925 as the government building and courthouse. The Museum first shared space in the Central Park Building with the Smithers Art Gallery, later moving to its own space on the first floor. Today the Museum collects, preserves and presents items of historical and cultural significance from Smithers and the Bulkley Valley and is enjoyed by over 5000 people per year.

The cooperative education/work experience program was a program offered by the Smithers Secondary School in which students combined their educational studies with a work placement in the community. Businesses and instutitions such as the Bulkley Valley Museum offered to be 'work stations' at which the students spent a minimum of 200 hours. The same or a similar program is still offered at the school, but the documents in this file pertain to the 1990s and early 2000s.

Items were kept with the Bulkley Valley Museum's internal records for an unknown period of time before being formally accessioned in May 2020.

The Smithers Mountain and Historic Signage Project was an effort in the late 1990s/early 2000s to erect a series of educational signs about the town’s mountain and historic heritage. It was undertaken by the Town of Smithers Parks, Recreation, and Culture Commission and the Bulkley Valley Museum, with attempts to involve Village of Telkwa and the Office of the Wit'suwet'en as well. History / Biographical
Alois “Louis” Schibli was born in Busslingen, Switzerland on December 23, 1919, to parents John Schibli and Anna Schifferli. In 1937, he immigrated to Canada with his father, mother and siblings (John and Agnes). They arrived in Smithers, B.C., on April 10, 1937 and remained there until 1949, when the family sold their farm and moved to Langley, B.C. In Langley, Louis met his wife, Gertrud (Trudi) Herzig. They married in Langley on September 5, 1950, and moved to Smithers in September, 1951. At this time, Schibli mainly worked in construction for his brother-in-law, George Adomeit. In 1958, he took a job in the newly formed School District No. 54 as a maintenance man, eventually being promoted to Maintenance Supervisor. The couple had seven children, including George, Margareth (Piccioni), Irene (Vanderark), Mary Jane (Warren), John, Andrew and Robert. Schibli also had a photography side-business called “Louis Studio”, photographing events such as weddings to school pictures. Schibli passed away on January 5, 2015, in Surrey, B.C. See finding aid for more information.

History / Biographical
The Kispiox Farmers’ Institute was incorporated in February of 1915. The first meeting was held on April 21, 1915, at the Salvation Army Hall in Poplar Park. In 1917, Matthew Halliday was elected as president, Fred Janze as vice-president, P.H. Sheehan as secretary-treasurer, and John Love and J.E. Janze as auditors. The institute temporarily closed down in 1920 (as reported in the 1920 annual report of the British Columbia Department of Agriculture). In September 23, 1929, a re-organization took place and the Kispiox Valley Farmers’ Institute was granted a new charter. As of 1929, under the Societies Act, the objectives of the Institute were: 1. To improve conditions of rural life, so that settlement may be permanent and prospers; 2. To promote the theory and practice of agriculture by lectures, essays, the circulation of information and other educational methods, and to stimulate interest by exhibitions, prizes and other means; 3. To arrange on behalf of its members for the purchase, distribution, or sale of commodities, supplies, or products, and generally to act on their behalf in all matters incidental to agricultural pursuits; 4. To promote social intercourse, mutual helpfulness, and the diffusion of knowledge, and to make new settlers welcome. Articles and advertisements in the Interior News indicate that the Kispiox Valley Farmers’ Institute was active until at least the early 2000s.
