Description
a: A large metal box with faux wood design with two distinct sections: the larger section is covered by a glass casing while the smaller section is covered by a solid two part folding faux wood case. Both sections contain black metallic leaves that have tabs; the result is filing system that the user can browse through like a filing cabinet. These tabs are numbered and also contain lettering. The two sections are linked: when one section's filing system is opened at a certain point, the other section automatically opens to a certain point. There is a divider between the two sections that contains two miscellanous department. This item had a number of decaying receipts stored within the metal leaves. A large sample has been preserved and has been accessioned into the BV Archives. They had to be physically seperated from the artifact for preservation reasons. These reciepts pertained to the operation of the Smithers Drug Store during the 1950s and 1960s. b: Folding hinge that attaches to bottom of the file and covers the glass case in faux wood covering, similar to smaller section.
Narrative
Howard Wheeler, whose name appears in the reciepts associated with this artifact as the pharmacist, owned the Smithers Drug Store. According to Chronicles of Smithers, he bought the business from Tom Wark in 1951 who had in turn bought it from W. V. Tomlinson - a name and letterhead that also appears in the associated reciepts - in 1945. Prior to this the location - which as of 2016 is Central Square Medical Clinic - was J Mason Adams Drugstore.

Purpose and relationship to the duplicator is unclear, but was found sitting with the duplicator in the back room.
History Of Use
A spirit duplicator (also referred to as a Ditto machine in North America, Banda machine in the UK or Roneo in France and Australia) was a printing method invented in 1923 by Wilhelm Ritzerfeld and commonly used for much of the rest of the 20th century. The term "spirit duplicator" refers to the alcohols which were a major component of the solvents used as "inks" in these machines. The device coexisted alongside the mimeograph. Spirit duplicator technology gradually fell into disuse starting in the 1970s after the availability of low-cost, high-volume xerographic copiers. (Source: Wikipedia, "Spirit Duplicator", accessed November 2017). Likely used by the School District to create copies of documents for use by students (handouts, tests, etc.).
