History / Biographical
Talk of forming a Bulkley Valley Agricultural Association to oversee the planning of an exhibition began in 1910 (Interior News, May 1910). Various names were used before incorporation, such as: Bulkley Valley Agricultural Association (Interior News, July 27, 1912), Bulkley Valley Agricultural Association and Farmer’s Institute (Omineca Herald, June 7, 1913) and Bulkley Valley Agricultural and Industrial Exhibition Association (Interior News, June 21, 1919). On July 14, 1919, the Bulkley Valley Agricultural and Industrial Association was incorporated under the Agricultural Act. The mandate of the Association was to "advance the interests of agriculture and to hold an annual exhibition of agricultural products at Smithers, and to do all such other things the directors may decide for the advancement of the association, the farmers and farming." The first directors of the Association included A. Kilpatrick (President, Smithers), J. G. Wood (Vice-President, Telkwa), and L.B. Warner (Secretary Treasurer, Smithers), George Oulton (Smithers), A. J. Prudhomme (Telkwa), E. C. Barger (Telkwa) and William S. Henry (Smithers) (Interior News, June 21, 1919). Smithers held its first Fall Fair in Albert Park, September 30th, 1919. After several years the Fair became a three-day event, presenting a wide variety of exhibits including agricultural displays, livestock and logging shows, handicraft and homemaking exhibits, stage shows, and a midway.

The Kispiox Farmers’ Institute was incorporated in February of 1915. The first meeting was held on April 21, 1915, at the Salvation Army hall in Poplar Park. In 1917, Matt. In 1920, the institute temporarily closed down (as reported in the 1920 annual report of the British Columbia Department of Agriculture), most likely due to World War I. In September 23, 1929, a re-organization took place and the Kispiox Valley Farmers’ Institute was granted a new charter. As of 1929, under the Societies Act, the objectives of the Institute are:

History / Biographical
Harry Kruisselbrink was born in the Netherlands in 1941 in the early part of World War II. The family immigrated to Canada in 1951 and lived in Barrett Lake just west of Houston. They moved to Smithers in 1952. Starting in 1955, he spent 40 years working in the communications industry, all of it in northern British Columbia. He met his wife Audrey in 1963; they were married in 1965 and had three children. He retired from the communications industry in 1995. Harry’s interest in local history began in his High School years. His teacher, Lee Curley, was able to convey his enthusiasm for history onto his students, including Harry. At about that same time Harry received a camera as a Christmas gift and since then rarely goes anywhere without it. In 1969, he became a founding member of the Smithers environmental group called SPEC. He joined the local air search and rescue group in 1972. The following year he was elected to Smithers Town Council and served three two-year terms. After retiring from Council, he continued to serve on the Town’s Planning Committee for many years. His wife and he were foster parents for 27 years. Harry was a member of the Smithers’ 60th Anniversary Committee that published the book, “Smithers from Swamp to Village,” written by author Lynn Shervill. Harry has written a number of historical sketches including a book “Smithers – A Railroad Town” and “Beyond the Call of Duty – The Adventurous Life of Rev. F. L. Stephenson”.

History / Biographical
Eventually, the Smithers Glee Club solely focused on singing, developing into a Choral Group. The Choral Group included both girls from St. Joseph’s School and Smithers Secondary School. The girls suggested a new name for this collective and soon they were known as the Smithers Harmonettes. In 1963, Eric Ekman joined as guitarist and a singer. Jack and Ed Rea joined as singers in 1964.
In 1959, Sister Mary Andrew, of the Order of the Holy Cross, began a glee club for the female students at St. Joseph’s School, which included singing, folk dancing and acting. The original members of the St. Joseph’s School Glee Club (aka Smithers Glee Club) included Charlotte Adomeit, Mary Anne Adomeit, Trudy Adomeit, Corrie Bazil, Mary Brinkac, Jean Calderwood, Judy Calderwood, Lorraine Calderwood, Elizabeth Duff, Rosemarie Duff, Sandra Haubrick, Judy Hidber, Tina Konst, Rita Maillot, Carol Miller, Joan Miller, Sharon Morris, Diane O’Neill, Dora Sikkes, Jane Sikkes, Gerry Silver, Glenda Spicer, and Lorraine Spicer. Many of these girls originally sang in the Children’s Choir at the Catholic Church with direction from Carl Spicer.
In 1961, the Smithers Glee Club traveled to Kitimat, B.C., to enter a drama competition and won an award for their performance of “Flapper Girls”. The Smithers Glee Club performed in a number of locations outside of Smithers, including Burns Lake and Prince Rupert. Dick Heggie drove the Smithers Glee Club to their out of town performances, while Sister Gregory and Sister Francis Ann (also of the Order of the Holy Cross) chaperoned.
In 1966, Sister Mary Andrew was relocated to Iona Academy, a girls’ boarding school, in St. Raphael’s Ontario. The Smithers Harmonettes continued to sing under the direction of Ed Rea, Vern Barge, Dave Forsythe and Carol Barter.
The Harmonettes recorded their first album “Introducing the Harmonettes of Smithers, B.C.” in November of 1964, which was followed by their second album “Good News.”
The last performance of the Smithers Harmonettes was at St. Joseph’s Auditorium, which Sister Mary Andrew directed before returning to Ontario.
The Smithers Harmonettes most significant performance was at Expo ’67 in Montreal, Q.C. Thirty-three girls and 10 chaperones left Smithers on April 20, 1967. Chaperones included Marisa Rae, RN, Carol Barter, RN, Dora Sikkes, PN, Marge (Barge) Henderson, Mrs. Forsythe and Mrs. Biro. The Harmonettes met Sister Mary Andrew in Alexandria, Ontario on April 26, who in turn took over directing the girls. The group performed a concert at Alexandria Hall. On April 28, 1967, the Smithers Harmonettes arrived in Montreal. They performed two shows per day (one at 12:30 PM and another at 5:30 PM) for four days. They returned for Smithers on May 4, 1967, arriving on May 8, 1967. The girls were interviewed by Ron Eastman of CFBV upon their arrival in Smithers. This tour also resulted in the Harmonettes’ final album: “Smithers Harmonettes Live at Montreal in 1967.”
The Smithers Harmonettes performed at a number of events, including the inauguration of the Queen of Prince Rupert ferry (May 21, 1961) and the Seattle World’s Fair (July 12 to July 17, 1962). The group performed live on a night-time program in Terrace, B.C. (February 14, 1964), as well as on CFTK for Alcan’s 5th annual Christmas TV program in Kitimat, B.C., (1965).
