The store was opened by Fred Sr. in 1919. Fred Jr. was killed in WW2 in 1944. Wilfred got married in 1945. Joe was born in 1917, had two sons play in the NHL and worked as a butcher. The store was at the corner of First Avenue and Main Street.

Emerson and Fred lived in the Bulkley Valley for a long time. Fred worked for some time at the Houston sawmill before moving to Nova Scotia.
Custodial History
Photo was donated by Avis Hopkins in 2013, scanned, and given a D number; original photo was returned to donor. In May 2020 the D numbers were removed and all items in this accession were combined under 2017.137 and given P numbers.

Ernest Hann (left) past president of the Fall Fair Board, with Fred Fowler (right), former Smithers Village Commissioner and later Smithers' first Mayor, accepting the return of the Seely Doodson Challenge Cup, which was presented in 1921, for best fat steer at the Smithers' Fall Fair. Gurth Rands (centre), a former resident of Smithers who moved to Victoria, found the cup at a second-hand store in Victoria. Seely and Doodson operated a meat store at the present site of 1156 Main St., Smithers. This was also the site of the Marshall Wells hardware store. This photo was also published in the August 27th 1969 edition of the Smithers Interior News. The cup resides with the Bulkley Valley Museum, artifact 1982.18.1.
