Custodial History
Photo was taken by Interior News staff for publication in the paper. It was retained by the Interior News until being transferred to the Bulkley Valley Museum, likely in 2007, as part of a large donation of photographs, negatives, and textual records. Item was stored in Room 6 until being found in collections and accessioned in Fall 2020.
Scope and Content
Photo of an aircraft fire simulation held on May 9th 1984. Two empty tanks were covered in gasoline by airport fire chief Paul Cohan and the resulting blaze was extinguished by the new airport fire truck. Ambulances, emergency vehicles from the town fire hall, and the RCMP were also at hand. Grade 7 students from Chandler Park School acted as crash victims.
Arrangement
Item was found in an envelope with other photographs from the same date. All photographs in this series have been removed from original order and arranged in the order in which they were scanned.

History / Biographical
The Canadian Brotherhood of Railroad Employees was first formed in 1908. The Smithers Branch (Div. No. 93) was started in September 22, 1926 and covered members from Endako to New Hazelton. The first meeting was held at the Smithers’ Canadian National Railway Station, where Normal Kilpatrick presided as President, and R.W. Champion as Secretary. Later the Canadian Brotherhood of Railroad Employees became the Canadian Brotherhood of Railway Transport and General Workers. The Smithers Branch existed until 1994 when the Canadian Brotherhood of Railway Transport and General Workers amalgamated with the Union of Canadian Auto Workers.
