History / Biographical
The Booster Bulkley was published monthly, covering social activities and school life from Rose Lake to Barrett. The first issue was published on November 22, 1923. The original editorial committee consisted of representatives from different districts of the Bulkley Valley: community leader Reverend L. Clinton Johnson (Convener), and schoolteachers Miss E.G. Stratton (Houston), Miss R.O. Stewart (North Bulkley), J. Ronald Todd (Topley), Frank Rendle (Forestdale) and Miss G. Keith (Rose Lake). The Interior News of July 30th 1924 reported that “The popular young pastor and the school teachers … undertook the publishing of a community newspaper, which … carried the boosting beyond the name and each month breathed optimism.” In spring 1924, the Booster staff also held a series of concerts/dances throughout the District, appearing at Topley, Houston, Forestdale and Decker Lake. The Booster had a short run, with only seven issues ever published, but reportedly enjoyed great success among its audience. Proceeds from sales of the paper were used to start a school library in Houston.

History / Biographical
Talk of forming a Bulkley Valley Agricultural Association to oversee the planning of an exhibition began in 1910 (Interior News, May 1910). Various names were used before incorporation, such as: Bulkley Valley Agricultural Association (Interior News, July 27, 1912), Bulkley Valley Agricultural Association and Farmer’s Institute (Omineca Herald, June 7, 1913) and Bulkley Valley Agricultural and Industrial Exhibition Association (Interior News, June 21, 1919). On July 14, 1919, the Bulkley Valley Agricultural and Industrial Association was incorporated under the Agricultural Act. The mandate of the Association was to "advance the interests of agriculture and to hold an annual exhibition of agricultural products at Smithers, and to do all such other things the directors may decide for the advancement of the association, the farmers and farming." The first directors of the Association included A. Kilpatrick (President, Smithers), J. G. Wood (Vice-President, Telkwa), and L.B. Warner (Secretary Treasurer, Smithers), George Oulton (Smithers), A. J. Prudhomme (Telkwa), E. C. Barger (Telkwa) and William S. Henry (Smithers) (Interior News, June 21, 1919). Smithers held its first Fall Fair in Albert Park, September 30th, 1919. After several years the Fair became a three-day event, presenting a wide variety of exhibits including agricultural displays, livestock and logging shows, handicraft and homemaking exhibits, stage shows, and a midway. The Fair continues to this day, having been held every year since 1919 except for 1932-1933, 1938-1945, 1950-1952, and 2020.
Scope and Content
The fonds is arranged into two series, Administrative and Fall Fair, and contains newspaper programs, prize lists, prize tickets, meeting minutes, correspondence, financial statements, newspaper supplements, entry forms, certificate of incorporation and a brief history on the founding of the fair.

History / Biographical
The Bulkley Valley Brass Band was founded in October 1970 after an unsuccessful attempt by the Smithers Rotary Club to form a community brass band. Whereas membership in the Rotary Band had been restricted to Smithers residents, the Bulkley Valley Brass Band widened its scope by welcoming members from Telkwa and Houston. It also sought to ensure its longevity by purchasing instruments which would be held by the band rather than by individual members, allowing them to be passed on to new members if their original users left the group or moved away. Anyone above the age of 12 was able to join, regardless of skill level. The BVBB’s director at its time of founding was Norman Atkins and its treasurer was Paul Sikkes, who also played trumpet for the band. The BVBB’s held its first concert, “An Evening at Home,” on December 12th 1970. It went on to participate in events such as Christmas Concerts, the Lakes District Music Festival, and the 1971 BC Centennial Celebrations Parade. The band won a great number of prizes in various music festivals. It was directed by Norm Atkins from 1970 until his death in early 1974. By January 1981 the band was in a state of abeyance due to a lack of local brass players. It does not appear to have been restarted.
Custodial History
Item 2011.39.01 was originally donated to the museum by Judi Adema in February 2011 and accessioned as part of the BVM discrete items collection. In June 2020 it was removed from this collection and added to the newly-created Bulkley Valley Brass Band fonds. Items numbered 2017.133 were originally collected by Jeanette Lough and eventually passed on to Ronald Toews, who donated them to the museum on December 8, 2017. They were added to the Smithers Community Band fonds (AF12). In June 2020 it was determined that they were not relevant to the fond topic and a separate fonds was created for the Bulkley Valley Brass Band.

The Bulkley Valley Community Arts Council (BVCAC) is a Smithers-based organization which promotes awareness of, and access to, the arts for Bulkley Valley residents from Houston to Hazelton. Its work includes funding arts projects, providing bursaries to aspiring artists, and coordinating community events. Council membership includes local artists, musicians, vocalists, dancers, and community organizations. The BVCAC was officially incorporated under the Societies Act in March 1980, although its history dates back to at least the late 1960s.
Custodial History
Items were created and used by the Bulkley Valley Community Arts Council during the course of its day-to-day activities. They were retained as internal records until being transferred to the Bulkley Valley Museum on May 19th 2021.
Scope and Content
This fonds includes textual and graphic records, photographs, and electronic media created and used by the Bulkley Valley Community Arts Council during the fulfillment of its mandate. The majority of the material is textual or graphic in nature, including foundational documents (constitution, certificate of incorporation, by-laws), policies, reports, financial statements, meeting minutes, agenda books, grant and bursary applications, project proposals, cast lists, pamphlets, and posters. Also included are 36 photographs and two scrapbooks related to children’s concerts in the 1980s-1990s, and a DVD with two short demo videos produced by local filmmaker Taylor Fox in 2009.
Arrangement
This fonds has been arranged into five series, each reflecting a particular function of the BVCAC. Series 1 contains administrative material relating to the incorporation, governance, and management of the BVCAC. Series 2 contains applications for funding made by individual artists and community groups, whether directly to the BVCAC or to other organizations with the support of the BVCAC. Series 3 contains grant applications made by the BVCAC to outside organizations. Series 4 contains bursary applications to the BVCAC. Series 5 contains material related to events, projects, and programs put on by the BVCAC. This arrangement has been imposed by Bulkley Valley Museum staff, but original order has been adhered to as closely as possible.

The Bulkley Valley Concert Association is a community group with the mandate of promoting and fostering an interest in the performing arts in the Bulkley Valley. It welcomes touring groups in concerts that feature choirs, live music, ballet, and theatre productions. The Association has a hands-on working board that directly engages with artists and manages each show. Records in this fonds indicate that the Bulkley Valley Concert Association existed as early as 1959; however, the Association considers itself to have been active only since 1963. Evidently the Association has existed in various forms throughout the years with its present form emerging after it was renewed at a public meeting held on October 13, 1977. After its reorganization in 1977, the Association came under the coordination of the B.C. Overture Concerts Society with Diane Harmon as campaign chairwoman, Elaine Lee as secretary, and Monica Fraser as treasurer.
Custodial History
Glad Bury, who was a teacher in the Bulkley Valley, originally collected items from accession 2017.68. These eventually passed on Pat McCammon.
Scope and Content
Fonds consists of scrapbooks (2009.12.1-.4) documenting concerts, shows and performances organized by the Bulkley Valley Concert Association from 1977 to 2007, and a membership list (2017.68) from 1963. History / Biographical
The Bulkley Valley District Hospital was first established in 1920 and occupied a pre-existing building on the corner of Second Avenue and King Street. It housed 13 beds, an operating room, an office, a kitchen and a dining area. The hospital continued to expand throughout the decade until 1933, when its ownership was transferred from the Hospital Board to the Sisters of St. Anne, and a new building was constructed. A 30-bed wing with an emergency operating room was added in 1955. By 1968, this building was ruled obsolete and work began on a new modern facility, to be run by the province after the Sisters relinquished control. The new Bulkley Valley District Hospital was opened in 1969. A major renovation project was launched in 1973 and the original 1934 building was demolished. The formation of the Bulkley Lodge Society through the Smithers Society of Concerned Citizens in 1982 replaced the need for extended care beds in the BV District Hospital. Today, the Hospital acts as an acute care facility with 25 beds, servicing communities from Houston to Hazelton, B.C. History / Biographical
The Bulkley Valley Museum (BVM) was founded in large part by Ernest Hann, an early pioneer who amassed a large collection of documents, photographs and artifacts representing local settler history. This became the core collection upon which the Museum was built. The first public displays of artifacts opened in 1967 in the newly-constructed Smithers Public Library. However, it was not until 1971 that the Bulkley Valley Historical & Museum Society was officially incorporated. With space becoming limited in the Library, the Museum was moved in 1974 to the historic Central Park Building, which had once served as Smithers' government building, courthouse, and jail. The Museum first shared a room with the Smithers Art Gallery before receiving its own space. Today the BVM collects, preserves and presents items of historical and cultural significance from Smithers and the Bulkley Valley and is enjoyed by over 5000 people per year.
Custodial History
All items in this fonds were retained by the Museum as internal records following their initial creation and use, and were accessioned and entered into the OF1 fonds upon being found in collections.

Furthermore, there is an increasing amount of born-digital material (Word docs, PDFs, images) which have yet to be fully processed into the fonds.

It held drama workshops and typically performed two full-length plays each season, as well as at special events such as Smithers’ 50th anniversary celebrations in 1963. The first incarnation of the Club folded in 1968. It was briefly revitalized by Ray Garford in 1974 but dissolved after he left Smithers the following year. The Club's third and longest incarnation lasted from 1984 until 2004. The latter two versions of the Bulkley Valley Players were part of the Bulkley Valley Community Arts Council. History / Biographical
The conservation efforts of the Bulkley Valley Rod and Gun Club predate its official formation in 1936. From 1925 to 1929, the group was already involved in planting trout eggs in Lake Kathlyn inlets, introducing and encouraging beneficial wildlife, while reducing and bringing awareness to invasive and damaging species. On May 1, 1936, a meeting was held in the Municipal Hall in Smithers for the purpose of forming the Bulkley Valley Fish Game and Forest Protective Association. R. Richardson was nominated as President and Mr. Mapleton as Secretary/ Treasurer. At a meeting on July 16, 1937, a motion was put forth to change the name to the Bulkley Valley Game Club and on March 10, 1938, the motion was carried to change the name to Bulkley Valley Rod and Gun Club. Over the years, the club has worked on many conservation and access projects, including cutting and improving trails to various lakes, building a hatchery to spawn and release fry, establishing the Pheasant project, and fostering better ecological environments. The group is still active as of 2020.
Custodial History
Records from accession number 2016.2 were in the possession of a former member's family, and were found in an attic. It was given to the current president of the Club, Brian Atherton in 2014. In January 2015 the book was transferred to the Archives.
