History / Biographical
Euro-Canadian settlement in the Telkwa area began around 1904 in the nearby town site of Aldermere. Around 1907, many people began to move down the hill to be closer to the juncture of the rivers and the anticipated route of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (GTP). The town site of Telkwa was soon surveyed and growing rapidly, with a hotel and church being constructed. By 1912, the village boasted a laundromat, real estate office, and a newspaper run by Joseph Coyle, among other businesses. However, the proposal of the GTP’s construction of a divisional point in Telkwa was met with local opposition; the company instead chose a location at the base of Hudson Bay Mountain which later became the town of Smithers. In 1914, Telkwa’ s boom ended abruptly as it suffered tremendous loss during a fire that started in Kennedy’s Pool Room and spread to other businesses. In total, 13 buildings in the village were lost and many others damaged. Many business owners chose not to rebuild in Telkwa, instead deciding to move to the growing town of Smithers. Today, the village has a population of approximately 1000.
