- Donald Simpson began prospecting on Hudson Bay Mountain in the early 1900s with his brother James, in an area now known as Simpson's Gulch. He acquired the Empire Group of claims around 1909. It was partially sold to Axel Elmstead in 1934, and eventually all sold off by Mary Simpson sometime after Donald's death in 1936.

- Items in accession 2020.39 were in the ownership of the Simpson family for many years before being donated by Elizabeth Cameron, granddaughter of James Simpson, on October 2nd 2020.
