- The first formal school classes in Smithers were held in April 1914 in the recently-built Methodist Church, located at the corner of Queen and Broadway streets. The first class held 12 students and was daught by Miss Mary Downey, who later married Fred Watson. The church burned down in December of that year, and classes were held in various buildings until the construction of the Smithers Elementary School in 1915.
