- History / Biographical
- The Telkwa Foundation (1976-c.1987) was a non-profit, non-partisan, public interest research group dedicated to environmentalism and social justice issues in Northwestern British Columbia. It was founded in late summer or early fall 1976 by Telkwa residents Tony Pearse and Jim Wright, in response to the planned construction of an oil pipeline from Kitimat to Edmonton, AB. The specific impetus for its creation, according to Tony Pearse, was a presentation and slideshow given in Smithers by Gary Gallon, director of the Vancouver SPEC, on issues in oil transportation. Initially a volunteer group, the Telkwa Foundation acquired a Canada Works Grant in spring 1977 allowing it to hire staff members for the Habitat North projects, which lasted until October 1978. It was officially incorporated under the Societies Act on November 6th 1978, with the aim “to develop and promote an ecologically-sound land ethic for the present and future development of northwestern British Columbia.” The organization held meetings, produced annual reports, published a monthly newsletter, gathered, analyzed and distributed research, gave public presentations and educational programs at schools and colleges, and tried to establish constructive relationships with federal, provincial, and local authorities. It disbanded in the late 1980s, at some point after July 21st 1987.
In addition to the founders, members included Richard Overstall, Steve Whipp, Mike Morrell, Walter Taylor, Patricia Moss, Sheila Peters, Lynn Shervill, David Price, Ian and Kathy Anderson, Bill Horswill, Sally Moore, Bill Meltcalf, Ric and Karen Careless, Rick Olding, Doug Aberley, Ann Mclean, Irving and Rosemary Fox, Dave Gillespie, and Ros Pojar.
