- History / Biographical
- The Hudson Bay Mountain Resort, formerly known as Ski Smithers, is a ski resort situated on Hudson Bay Mountain outside Smithers, B.C. Officially established in 1969, its origins lie in the 1930s when Norwegian and Swedish settlers began skiing in the backcountry. Local ski enthusiasts started building cabins on the mountain for tourist use in the 1950s. Lifts and tow ropes were installed by 1960, followed by t-bars in the 70s and a triple chair and day lodge in the 80s. Over the years, Ski Smithers/Hudson Bay Mountain Resort has sponsored the Winter Festival, held special events such as Ski-a-Thons, the Schuss Boomer Downhill, and Schnai Dai, and offered ski packages and programs to all ages. The resort underwent further development between 2005 and 2014 due to the input of various new investors and management groups. Gary Mathiesen became the sole owner in 2015-16. As of 2020, Hudson Bay Mountain Resort covers 315 acres and has 41 runs (Green, Blue, Black, and Double Black). It is the largest ski resort in northern British Columbia.
