- 4-H is a U.S.-based network of youth organizations intended to promote citizenship, leadership, responsibility and life skills among young people through experiential learning programs and a positive youth development approach. Founded in 1902, it initially focused on instructing rural youth in farming, agricultural, and home-making practices. 4-H Canada is an independent non-profit organization which has overseen 4-H networks nationwide for over 100 years.
Smithers’ local chapter, the Evelyn 4-H Club (then the Evelyn 4-H Beef and Garden Club), was founded on December 6th 1962; the first meeting was held on December 6th of that year at the Lake Kathlyn School. President elected was Don Chapman, Vice President Lorna Chapman, Secretary-Treasurer Gwen Ridennoure. Press correspondent was Yolanda Gyger, Dave Price was club leader, and William Quadros was assistant leader. The Evelyn 4-H Beef Club was formed in 1965 with Bob Storey elected president. Over the years its members have regularly contributed livestock and poultry to be judged at the annual Fall Fair. The club celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1987. As of 2020, it is one of three 4-H clubs in the Bulkley Valley and has projects in raising horses, cows, pigs, sheep, poultry, and rabbits.
