History / Biographical
The first official meeting of a saddle club in Smithers occurred on February 6th 1960, when over thirty riders met under the leadership of Obie Helps. This club formally named itself the Northern Saddle Club in 1964. With the goal of promoting equestrian activities in the Bulkley Valley, the NSC organized local events such as horse racing, trail rides, competitions, clinics, gymkhanas, and visits to the Bulkley Lodge. It also held public fundraisers such as dances, raffles, picnics, and sports days. The Club has been involved with the Fall Fair since its formation, participating in the parade, holding horse-related events, loaning equipment, and helping develop the fairgrounds. The Northern Saddle Club continues its contributions to the equestrian community of the Bulkley Valley as of 2020, supporting all disciplines and equine-related activities for horse-lovers. (Condensed from a write-up on the Northern Saddle Club’s history prepared by Lexy Kirk).
