- History / Biographical
- The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers was founded in Michigan on May 8, 1863 as a trade organization for railroad workers. The first Canadian chapter was established soon after in Toronto in 1865. Although little documentation of the Brotherhood exists in the fonds, the local branch (Division III) was likely established in the Bulkley Valley around the time of the completion of Grand Trunk Pacific railway in 1914. It was certainly in existence by 1926, when the Brotherhood’s chairman, along with the chairman of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen, visited Smithers for a meeting of members of the two orders. Over the years, several local Division III members have attended provincial, national, or international Brotherhood conventions, such as Sam J. Mayer in 1927 (in Vancouver) and 1929 (in Winnipeg and Montreal) and Thomas Britton in 1966 (in Cleveland, Ohio). The Brotherhood has also been involved in local charitable endeavors, such as donating $1,200 to the Bulkley Valley District Hospital for a heart monitor in 1974.
