- Mariam (Mary) Uriel McDonell was born in Orillia, Ontario on February 18, 1896, to parents Alexander Roy McDonell (Sr.) and Catherine Campbell. She received a B.A. at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, and taught primarily in Saskatchewan, specializing in Commercial Work. She would frequently accompany and travel with her brother, Alexander Roy, on fishing trips in the summer. McDonell served in the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service from 1943 to 1945. She permanently moved to British Columbia in 1955. Mary passed away in Smithers, B.C., on November 17, 1979.
