- History / Biographical
- An office for the Department of Public Works was present in Smithers by 1918. It began operating out of the town’s new Provincial Building (now the Central Park Building) in 1925. The Department oversaw matters such as municipal infrastructure, construction, and waste management. For example, it was instrumental in the construction of the Bulkley Valley District Hospital in 1934 and the installation of a Municipal Water System in 1949. Today, the Works and Operations Department is in charge of the operation and maintenance of the Town’s infrastructure, as well as construction of specific capital works projects. Its areas of responsibility include municipal buildings, the cemetery, solid waste/recycling collection, the compost facility, parks and trails, paved roads, sewers, arenas, snow removal, streets and sidewalks, the storm sewer collection system, the water distribution system, the waste transfer station, and RV storage at the fairgrounds.
