- History / Biographical
- Lions Clubs International is a global non-political community service organization originally established in Chicago in 1917. The Smithers chapter of the Club was founded on February 24th 1964 with the sponsorship of the Terrace and Kitimat Lions Clubs. It received its official charter from Lions International on April 11th 1964. The newly-formed Club had 27 charter members and was headed by Harvey MacKirdy as president, Geof Wright and Andy Stalker as vice-presidents, Nick Shaigec as Secretary, and Ed Good as Treasurer. As with all Lions Clubs, it was initially male-only; the first female member, Tracy Rice, joined in 1993. The Smithers Lions Club determined and met community needs, awarded bursaries to high school students, provided children’s activities such as Jam Pail Curling, and raised funds for hospital equipment, recreational facilities, and other causes. In the 1970s the Lions were responsible for the purchase and transportation of a CNR railcar, which served for a time as a Tourist Information Centre and currently (as of October 2020) hosts the 93.9 CICK Radio. The Club also owned the Smithers Lions Den at the Fall Fair grounds. The Smithers Lions Club dissolved in 2020 due to an aging and dwindling membership, having served the community for 56 years. For a list of Smithers Lions Club presidents, see Finding Aid.
