- Description
- A large portable gas lamp painted black. Set within a metal frame which forms the stand. It is attached to the middle support of the stand by a large silver coloured wing-nut at either side. This allows the lamp to be moved forward and backward to position the light. The head of the lamp is round with a deep center and slightly convex back. Riveted to the centre top is a small rectangular vent with an open rounded roof. The front face is covered by three thick pieces of glass fitted together. It is hinged at the top and latched at the bottom, being secured by a screw-type fastener. "tilley-hendon" is in white print at the centre of the top and bottom pieces of glass.
The inside has a mirror-like, silver-coloured metal liner, and contains the gas outlet and the mantle. The back has a hole (9 cm in diameter) near the bottom centre, which allows access to the gas control inside. Above this hole, projecting slightly outward, is a metal handle which is riveted to the back.
The bottom consists of a round, deep, flat-bottomed tank, in which the gas was contained. To the left, on the back of the tank, is a brass fitting with "tilley lamp co" and "hendon, eng" embossed around the top. At the centre of this fitting is a wooden handle attached to a bar which, when pumped, pressurizes the tank. On the left side of the tank is a small brass pressure gauge showing "empty" and "full.".
