- History Of Use
- Ernest Hann 1889 - 1982. Mr. Hann was a pioneer contractor that settled in Smithers in 1913. For more info see Historical Research File: Hann,Ernest/Addie. This is one of the many types of compass planes. There is a number of adjustable & non adjustable curved bottom wood or metal planes made for working carved surfaces such as coach door panels, wheels, arches etc. Quite a few of Mr. Hann's planes have the look of being homemade; this is because they are. He was a fine craftsman and in those times, craftsman usually made their own tools. In speaking with a craftsman today, one mentioned these planes would not be used today, rather the moulding and planning would all be done with the various electric woodworking tools used today, i.e.; the band saw, routers, etc.
