When the handle is compressed, the jaws open. The metal disk keeps the jaws locked open. The chain is used to secure the trap in place by placing a stick through it into the ground.

- History Of Use
- George DeWitt 1929-1987. George served the museum society as a president and a vice president. He was a collector of many things and donated several articles to the museum. This leg hold trap was used to trap Weasel, Squirrel, Martin, Coyote, Bobcat and Wolverine just to name a few. The traps were tended to on a weekly basis. These are still in use today, however it is a very controversial issue.
