Description
1997.58.1 a: A small brown mahogany wooden box lined with black velvet on the inside. The lid of the box has a yellow manufacturers' label in the centre of it. "Sikes Hydrometer Dring&Faage 56 Stamford St London Makers to the Revenues of the United Kingdon & Colonies. There is a crest with two lions on either side of it and a crown at the top between the names Sikes & the Maker below. It has two 2.5cm long brass hinges at the back and two brass hook fasteners at either end of the front. Inside the box are indentations which hold the instruments securely in place. 1997.58.1 b: A glass thermometer mounted on a 18.2 cm long narrow piece of plastic type material, with brass mounts at either end. DRING&fAGE 56 STAMFORD ST LONDON is marked above the top of the termometer. There is a small mark to one side with the words TRADE at the top and MARK at the bottom. Thermometers are marked in degrees from 30 to 100. 1997.58.1 c: Is the hygrometer which has a narrow brass ruler with markings from 0 down to 10 and is attached to a lightweight brass coloured bulb. The trade mark is at the top of one side of the ruler without the makers name. Along side of the instrument itself are 10 ivory colour buttons which would had held the disk type of weights (msg) in place. 1997.58.1 d: A thin weighted 4.5cm long brass coloured tube which appears to have been attached to the bottom of the bulb at the top. The bottom has a small tear drop shape to it which would hold the hydrometer upright when inserted into water.
Narrative
The ten weights for the hydrometer are missing. They would have been round flat disks with a slit on one side that slipped into place on the pegs.
